Here is a conversation I had with my friend Paul, in the comments section. I was mildly alarmed too...

For 3 days El and Bram silently walked two power lines that traverse from Wales’ coast to Englands' cities, a simultaneous performance and lament for the land in which they both grew up. This action became the catalyst for a project that seeks to explore and expose a diversity of power relations

hi been meaning to write since your power walk email first came
had a quick look at the blog
looks like you've just done some walking and taken some photos
sorry to be negative
but where's the ART? you have tagged as an EVENT so think fair to ask about art content.
seems to me you either do a walk a la Richard Long where the walk is the purpose of the piece.
or something like a Hamish Fulton where several art pieces are created and the journey route is somewhat incidental.
you seem to have fallen between the 2?
a strong idea of following power line
but seems without any clear purpose?
research is fine
but think that's all you've done really
with some little art 'happenings' along the way
"everyone should go and have some fun"
bah humbug
my usual complaint
just seems like you had a bit of 'fun' ...
my interpretation of 'power walk' - noting both meanings
would be a non stop hard trek along the power line? with a single specific purpose.
else just becomes a 'what i did with my summer messing around in rock pools' type travelogue
cant tell from the blog
when the walk was?
"For 3 days El and Bram will silently walk two power lines that traverse from Wales’ coast to Englands' cities"
seems to just be bitty days doing this n that
Hey paul,
Good, i was expecting some heavy critique from you, and yes as yet the project is just a body of research the blog acting as a public diary of the project really, that we are in fact only just starting to use in that way. The blog also functions as playing with the power in the collaboration, we are both in control of the blog and can independently add delete edit, as are you free to publish your critique. so the blog itself is a submittal to power in a sense.
Initially the work started out as an exploration on our parts of the power networks that race across wales taking power to england, a thing the welsh masses have long been subjected to, but were previously a lot more proactive in protesting against. so we started off exploring this societal level of power and have since started to bring it back to our individual experiences of power, both that we submit to and are in control of. A recent performance saw us lead a group of people round totnes on a formal power-walk - in the exercise sense of the word - leading to an installation in my house whereby all the partakers in the performance were given back enough peanuts to replace the energy they had just used, those who came to the installation but did not come on the performance were not given any peanuts. The installation showing an archive of the various pieces of research gathered thus far thereby taking the audience from the power they individually use through their metabolism to the power they depend on when they turn on a switch.
within the body of work displayed are various elements that play on the power relationships that exist in the production of artwork, collaborative work and audience participation. some play on the latent gap that exists between my experience and yours, some play on the power dynamics of telling but not showing of showing but not telling and of offering an opportunity that is empty unless it is taken.
The 'event' itself that the blog refers to was the initial walk across wales undertaken simultaneously by me and el. Just a simple performative action that saw us attempt to follow the power lines across wales, i was following the sixites pylons that run from a nuclear power station to liverpool and el was trying to find the new pipeline that is going to supply gas for 20 years(from qatar) that runs 140miles without the need for planning permission. the walk lasted a weekend and saw us both hounded off the route -her by security and me by farmers- not to mention that we were both drowned out by the worst weather july has seen for decades. we took identical equipment, and had a series of things set up that were meant to be done as we walked which were ultimately made impossible by the weather.
but do not infer that the blog is all, or that it is anything more than it can be, which is a linear diary of what has occured added to in snatches and moments.
anyway, you've always been a terrifying critic for me and its good to see you're still fervently fighting the good fight.
